About Ljungaviken Wetlands

Ljungaviken Wetlands is a coastal wetland environment located in Skåne County along the Öresund Strait. The area comprises a mix of shallow bays, salt marshes, reed beds, and mudflats that create an important habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Its unique brackish waters support diverse aquatic plants and provide crucial resting and nesting grounds for migratory birds on their Baltic Sea flyway. Historically, the wetlands were shaped by gradual land uplift and tidal movements, which have formed rich biodiversity hotspots. The reserve is particularly renowned for its variety of waterfowl and wading birds, including species such as avocets, oystercatchers, various duck species, and occasionally rare visitors like the Eurasian bittern. Apart from birdwatching, visitors can enjoy peaceful walks on designated trails with observation towers strategically placed to allow unobtrusive viewing of wildlife. The wetlands also include valuable spawning grounds for fish and habitats for amphibians and insects that contribute to the ecological balance. Ljungaviken Wetlands attracts both amateur naturalists and professional ornithologists eager to explore its dynamic ecosystem. The area's natural beauty combined with its ecological importance makes it a rewarding outdoor destination in southern Sweden.
